How to Water With Plastic Watering Cans

    • 1). Fill your plastic watering can at a sink or outside using a hose. Don't overfill the can so that it spills as you carry it.

Water plants deeply from your plastic watering can. Most plants do best with a deep watering every few days instead of a light sprinkling daily. Put your finger into the soil. It should feel moist, but not soggy, 2 inches under the surface. Aim to achieve this balance in your watering. Don't allow plants to wilt before watering.

    • 3). Water the soil only with your plastic watering can. Avoid wetting the plant leaves as this can spread disease.

Fertilize your plants. Mix liquid fertilizer according to package directions in a designated plastic watering can used only for that purpose. Plants vary in their need for feeding, so check with a garden specialist about your specific plants.
