How to Sew Interlining in Draperies

    • 1). Take down your draperies and place face up. You will need to carefully remove any hooks so that they will lay flat. Using your measuring tape, record the size of your draperies by measuring the length and width, then set aside.

    • 2). Determine the type of interlining material you need based on what your draperies are used for. If they are in a formal room and need interlining strictly to keep from fading, purchase a lighter color that best coordinates with your draperies. If you need the interlining to help darken the room, as in the case of a bedroom, purchase a darker color to ensure sure little to no light shines through when the draperies are closed. Purchase an amount equal to the measurements of your draperies plus 2 inches. This will take into account the required hemming.

    • 3). Spread the interlining out face down, fold a 1-inch edge and iron flat. You may want to pin every few inches before ironing so that the material will stay folded while ironing. After ironing, you can remove the pins. Place the interlining face down on your draperies so that the right sides are facing. Carefully pin around only three edges, leaving the bottom edge open.

    • 4). Sew the two pieces together with a 1/2-inch hem on the three sides that are pinned, using a sewing machine and heavy cotton thread. Turn the draperies and interlining right-side out, then pin the open ironed edge of the interlining to the draperies. Sew the bottom closed, making sure there are no rough edges or hanging threads visible.

    • 5). Shake your draperies to get out any wrinkles, then reattach the hooks that were removed to measure. Hang your draperies and adjust the folds as needed to drape correctly.
