How to Replace the Bottom Sash in a Vinyl Double-Hung Window

    • 1). Unlock the window and raise the lower sash a few inches in the frame.

    • 2). Release the upper part of the sash from the frame by pulling it toward you. Note that some sashes have release buttons on each side of the top of the sash that must be slid toward the center of the window to be able to pull the top of the sash out of the window frame.

    • 3). Rotate the sash downward until it is perpendicular to the window frame. Raise one side of the sash until it clears the window frame.

    • 4). Raise the other side of the sash while pulling it slightly away from the window frame. Remove the sash from the frame and place it in a safe location to avoid breakage.

    • 5). Install your replacement sash back into the window frame by making sure the exterior of the window is facing outward and placing the pivot pin at the bottom of one side of the sash into the window frame track at an angle.

    • 6). Lower the other side of the sash, making sure the other pivot goes into the window frame track on the opposite side of the window. Push the top of the sash into the window frame until it locks into place. Raise and lower the sash in the frame to make sure it operates smoothly. Close the sash and lock the window if desired.
