How to Dehydrate a Cellphone to Remove Water

    • 1). Take the phone apart as much as you can. If you have a faceplate or case, take it off. Remove the battery cover and battery. You want to reduce the phone to as many pieces as possible without breaking it.

    • 2). Pour out as much of the water as you can and wipe the phone down with paper towels. Insert the towels into holes and crevices in the phone to wick away excess water. Wipe the gaps between the keys, and between the screen and housing.

    • 3). Fill a plastic bag approximately half full with dried rice or silica gel packets. Purchase the packets from a hardware store, or use the packets that come with new electronic devices.

    • 4). Place the phone and battery in the bag with the desiccant, then seal the bag.

    • 5). Wait at least 24 hours before removing the phone from the bag.

    • 6). Place the phone on a paper towel and check on it after about an hour. If the towel shows signs of water, return the phone to the bag. If there are no water stains or dampness, turn the phone over and check again after an hour.

    • 7). Reassemble the phone once there are no signs of water or dampness on the towel.
